By the time Jim Gannon arrived at the Borders in Warrenton on Saturday afternoon, the copies of Jim Russell’s book, ‘Beyond the Rim’, had sold out. Luckily Gannon had another case but that quickly disappeared as well.
Copies were scarce and those who didn’t get a book left their names with Borders so that they could get one.
“We’ve sold 132 copies,” said Chauncey Kopp who helped orchestrate the event for Borders but that didn’t include the growing list of names.
Success.
An elderly 85-year-old black man had come to Borders to talk about his book, Beyond the Rim: From Slavery to Redemption in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Author Jim Russell was ecstatic and worked the crowd well telling them of his youth growing up with Sister Caroline, his great-grandmother who was a slave in Rappahannock County.
Russell sporting a brown suit and an elegantly knotted tie drew the audience in as if they were all young children waiting to hear another story from an aging grandpa with a twinkle in his eye.
