Reserve Corps
“You’re making our nation safer,” President George W. Bush told volunteers during a one-hour orientation for the Medical Reserve Corps. The instructional video also contains a message from the Surgeon General and basic information about how the network of volunteers is organized and how it would be put into action.
After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and the subsequent formation of the Department of Homeland Security, the creation of the Citizens Corps then lead to the network of volunteers known as the Medical Reserve Corps. These and other volunteerbased groups evolved as a way to quickly deal with various emergencies and to provide manpower.
The local health district currently has more than 300 volunteers registered, one-third of which are non-medical volunteers. The district has set a goal of recruiting 1,000 volunteers from the five counties it serves: Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock.
The recruiting process seeks out practicing and retired physicians, nurses, pharmacists, aides and other health-related professionals.
