smaller school in Madison County. It had taken her six years and ten 32-gallon trash cans. She encouraged Makela not to give up.
Next came the issue of what to do with the tab tops once they reached the goal. A fourth grade student in 2004, AJ Sargent, suggested that they recycle them and donate them to Ronald McDonald House in Charlottesville. His family had once stayed there. The class unanimously voted to support this.
During the next two and a half years, tab tops were used to reinforce a variety of skills. Students researched their weight, and converted them into units of weight and linear measure. Letters were written to the editor of the Rappahannock News and to generous friends in the community who had sent in tabs. As part of each year’s poetry unit, students wrote cinquains and songs about the shiny little pieces of metal. Students made oral presentations over the school’s intercom system, and created objects using them. Seven contests were held to see which class could bring in the most tabs . . .and on and on.
Many generous businesses and individuals in the community helped support the effort in large ways. Country Cafe, Burgers ‘n Things and the Rappahannock National Bank allowed students to place collection containers in their businesses. The Senior Citizens from the Rappahannock Senior Center and Darcy Canton, Alice Hitt, Catherine Pickett Gough, a cashier at the Warrenton Food Lion, Debbie Zinn, who sings at Skyland Lodge in the National Park and hosts “Pickin’ Parties” around the area for a variety of charities, David, a young man who works at Culpeper Memorial Hospital, and Larry Collins, a retiree who has been a frequent substitute at RCES have all been extremely generous donors and have helped
