The Corps
• What: Rappahannock-Rapidan Medical Reserve Corps; local branch of national Medical Reserve Corps, under direction of Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District. • Vision: Volunteers protecting Virginia’s public health. • Mission: To serve counties of Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock by establishing local teams of public health volunteers to strengthen public health infrastructure and improve emergency preparedness and response. • Staff: One part-time volunteer coordinator; remaining staff provided through regional health department and volunteers — including practicing and retired physicians, nurses, pharmacists, aides, other health-related professionals and others volunteers interested in health issues. • Leadership: 8-member advisory board made up of representatives from regional hospitals and emergency sen/ice departments in the area. • Training: Each volunteer required to attend one-hour orientation and then one two-hour training session each year; training sessions usually held monthly on various topics. • Budget: $45,500; three-year grant funded through the federal Department of Health and Human Sen/ices ends Sept. 30; local and state health departments provide in-kind services, such as Web site, office space and equipment. • Information: Contact Claudia Vento, volunteer coordinator, at the local health department office, 829-7350, ext. 132. • On the Web: rrmrc@vdh.virginia.gov
