The United Methodist Churches have roots with John Wesley, a priest in the Church of England. Wesley and his brother Charles, led a revival movement within the Church of England. The Wesley’s and their followers were known as “Methodists.” The Methodist movement spread to the American colonies and in 1784 organized with the name, “Methodist Episcopal Church.” In 1844 concerns about slavery split the Church. Those who could not support slavery, primarily those churches in the North, retained the name, Methodist Episcopal Church, while churches that favored slavery took the name, Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1939, the two groups rejoined (along with the Methodist Protestant Church which split with the MEC in 1830) to become The Methodist Church. In 1968 The Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church and took the name The United Methodist Church.
SperryviUe Methodist Church
The first SperryviUe Methodist chinch was built in 1852 on land which was purchased from Mrs. Lucy Wood.
This church was in the same charge as those in Flint Hill, Amissville, Washington and the chapel later named Willis Chapel.
In 1915, the old church was tom down and the present church built on the same site. Until the new building was completed, services were held in the Masonic Hall in SperryviUe. The cornerstone was laid with Masonic ceremonies on August 12, 1915,
A stable congregation made up primarily of adults, many “senior citizens” but multi-generational, several children participate in a very active children’s Sunday school at 10:15 a.m. following by the worship service at 11:30 a.m. Bible study every Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The church has a choir, average attendance around 25, Holy communion the first Sunday of the month.
