As a landowner at the confluence
of the Rush and Thornton Rivers for over twenty years, I am taking the opportunity to respond to the letter to the Editor (“Don’t Rush In”) by former federal judge and former FBI and CIA Director Bill Webster that was published in last week’s paper.
With all due respect for Judge Webster, the available data from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (“DEQ”) and that gathered over the last four years by local Rappflow volunteers here in the county suggests that Judge Webster is either uninformed or misinformed.
Monthly water quality monitoring by DEQ of the Thornton and Rush Rivers has been going on for the last two years, since July 2004. The data shows that the level of fecal coliform in the Rush River at the Route 211 bridge near the Old Mill is more than double the level of fecal coliform in the Thornton River below the Sperryville sewage treatment facility.
