They i£ere of all ages and quickly filled the arranged chairs that had been set up in one comer of the store then spilled over to the stairway leading to the store’s coffee shop.

Russell has an easy charm and sense of humor that immediately puts people at ease. His own broad smile is contagious and soon had people laughing along with him.

“Was your grandmother resentful?” asked one woman.

Russell paused but only for a moment. “No, no, I can’t say that she was. She had been through a lot and seen a lot but I can’t say that she was bitter.”

Russell was a boy of 12 in 1933 when he lived in Sperryville and frequented the porch of his great grandmother. He held her stories in his heart and cherished them as he cherished her until her death at 108.
