aged 209 percent higher, i.e. well more than double the level in the Thornton below where treated effluent is discharged into the River.

According to DEQ officials, a level of 400 or more is considered dangerous and unsafe. In five out of ten months over the last two years, the samples from the Rush River for coliforms exceeded that 400 level. The average level over this same period for the Thornton River was 118.

The water quality data compiled by Rappflow volunteers since 2001 also indicates that the overall water quality level - measured by the number of various aquatic life forms in the two rivers - is deteriorating in the Rush, while improving or staying about the same in the Thornton. The water quality index in the Rush peaked in the Spring of 2001 at an index level of twelve. It is now nine. During the same period in the Thornton River, the index level has been consistently higher, mostly index levels of eleven’s or twelve’s.
