Then in his ‘80’s, Russell approached Jim Gannon about publishing his memories into a book and Gannon, upon reading and hearing the stories of this strong woman who had survived slavery, knew that they must be printed and that he did.
Recently, the Washington Post printed an extensive piece on Russell in their Loudoun Extra supplement. It drew the attention of a much wider audience than those familiar with Russell in Rappahannock, Culpeper and Fauquier Counties.
“I told my wife, we are taking the children and we are going to hear this man,” said an ebullient Don Gilman who had come from Loudoun County with his two young children.
“This is part of our history, this is someone we need to meet.”
