Just how good is -the Clarke County High School cross country program?
Scratches in the starting lineup, including two-time defending, Group A state champion Simon BiddleSnead, could not even disturb the consistency and excellence that the Eagles enjoy.
“When they saw BiddleSnead wasn’t running, they said that we’re going to win,” Rappahannock County senior Alex Ramey said. “But, no. I was just trying to come in sixth.”
Ramey was a spot off, but his seventh-place individual finish still led the Panthers to one of their finest showings in the Bull Run District meet Wednesday at the Blue Rock Inn. The Panthers ran second with 73 points.
Seniors Josh Makela and Juan Tisera also won all-district honors by placing eighth and 15th, respectively.
Clarke successfully defended its district team title, placing its seven runners in the top 15 spots. This is the second consecutive year that the Eagles captured the first five places for a total of 15 points, the lowest winning score that a cross country team can have. George Mason had 87 points in finishing third.
On the girls’ side, Rappahannock freshman Savanna Booth took 14th place and qualified for the Region B meet in Charlottesville. The top four teams and first 15 individuals go to the regional meet.
The Rappahannock County girls’ team posted a fifth-place finish with 121 points. Clarke County captured the district title behind sophomore Sophie Holmes’ first-place time of 19:11. The Eagles totaled just 23 points.
