A visit to Japan three years ago motivated Homing to change her method of producing pottery.
“I had stopped making pots for a number of years,” she said. “Just recently, after a trip to Japan, I decided wood firing is the way to go.”
Homing commissioned husbandand-wife team Will Ruggles and Douglass Rankin, of Rock Creek Pottery in North Carolina, to help her build a fast-fire wood kiln on her property.
The kiln enables her to fire the pottery relatively quickly. The fast-fire kiln does a job in about 16 hours; a conventional kiln can take up to 12 days.
