Cole was not available for comment Wednesday.
Gorfein said she does not know why Cole decided to close the market or what the building at 337 Gay St. will be used for next, but she hopes another market opens in town.
“It’s a great place,” Gorfein said. “People come in and they talk and gossip and they get coffee.”
The market’s closure was also a surprise to Washington Mayor Eugene Leggett, who found out about the shutdown Wednesday.
“The market has been a great asset to the town and I hope that it can be continued” Leggett said. “Washington needs a market.”
The market will remain open through Sunday to sell sandwiches, soup, side dishes and drinks during the Artists of Rappahannock Studio and Gallery Tour this weekend. But Gorfein said she expects the rest of the store’s inventory to be cleared out by Saturday.
