Jon William Henry spends most of his time thinking out of the box. “In order to see what’s in the box, you have to open it,” Henry said about his new art exhibit. Henry has recently created a piece of what he calls “The Metamorphic Box,” in the Student Art Gallery at Highland School, a Warrenton private school. Henry describes his work as a piece of “Installation Art.”
Installation art, Henry explained, is more conceptual than older forms of art. “Installation Art changes the environment and the space around you,” he said. Henry’s project does just that. After receiving permission from the Art Gallery directors and getting the go-ahead from the headmaster, Henry began stapling cardboard to the walls dramatically changing the immediate environment. “Cardboard is integral to the scheme because it holds nearly eveiything that we use in the modem age,” Henry said; He explained that his mentors were supportive of the project, especially since he planned to utilize the school’s Art Gallery. “The biggest obstacle was the fire code,” he said. Henry said that he could not block any alarms or sprinklers and he. couldn’t staple cardboard to the ceiling.
