Literacy Efforts
Headwaters is pleased to announce that it has received a $5,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to support its programs which help Rappahannock children to develop their .literacy skills. These “literacy-enhancing” programs include the Starfish Mentoring Program, Mini-Grants, and Next Step.
Verizon believes that beyond the imperative to improve basic literacy levels, people must gain the complex literacy skills needed across the lifespan, from early childhood through adulthood, to participate and compete in the 21st Century. The Verizon Foundation leverages its financial, human and technology resources, in collaboration with national and local partners, toward the goal of building literate communities. Verizon’s External Affairs Manager Doug Bramiber, whose support in securing the grant was key, enjoys outdoor activities during trips to Rappahannock County with his family. Said Helen Williams, Headwaters Chair and former teacher, “I’ve been a math teacher all my life. I love mathematics, love teaching it and everything about it. But if you ask me what’s more important, I would say you need to be literate—it’s the foundation of everything, including math skills. Make them literate first...then I’ll teach them algebra! We are delighted that Verizon has chosen to support our work.”
