as they try to pronounce it! Where did this funny name come from? The name actually comes from Joseph Amiss, who was one of two men granted tracts of land here in the late 1700s by Lord Fairfax. The other was Joseph Bayse. Joseph Amiss in turn distributed his land among his four sons, William, Gabriel, Philip and Thomas. When it came time to name this community, the choices came down to Bayseville or Amissville. There appears to be some dispute over how Amissville came to be chosen. But I like the story that it was decided by a horse race!
