The Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program of Falls Church High School has just become one of only three Nationally Certified Demonstration Sites in the Eastern United States and the only high school to achieve this accreditation from AVID. As such, Falls Church High School is the flagship model school for others to observe a school working side by side with its community partners -Raytheon, Project Discovery, and Air Methods - to help students achieve. In AVID, average students no longer remain average; they develop learning skills that truly make them scholars. Fall Church’s AVID program celebrates a 98% college acceptance and attendance rate, compared to the national average of 45%. The AVID program provides support and develops students’ learning skills so that students not only gain entry into AP courses, but excel in them, allowing them to become competitive for nationally recognized and ranked universities.

The AVID program targets students in the academic middle — B, C, and even D students — who have the desire to go to college and the to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous classes, but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they
