La Festa di San Silvestri is celebrated in Italy on New Year’s Eve. As with most Italian festivals, food plays a major role. Families and friends get together for a huge feast. The star of the dinner is the lentil, symbolizing money and good fortune for the coming year. Traditionally, the dinner in many parts of Italy also includes a cotechino, a large spiced sausage. The pork symbolizes the richness of life in the coming year.
Another New Year’s tradition in Rappahannock was Roger Klinger’s three day retreat in silence that gave us the opportunity to reflect on our year and our lives. Each day of contemplation ended with a pot luck dinner.
Although traditions vary, what is common among many people is the ritual of marking the end of one year and the beginning of another. Best wishes to all of you for a happy and healthy New Year!
Many parts of the U.S. celebrate the new year by consuming black-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity. I am told by Peter Hughes that there is an annual gathering at the Laurel Mills store to celebrate New Year’s with black-eyed peas. He says that it is not to be missed.
