Commuters did experience heavier-than-usual traffic delays and closures on the interstate during some of the two-year widening project.
The new phase of the widening is expected to be a bigger chore because of the work on the ramps and bridge, and that may mean more waiting in traffic while the work is under way.
“It’s more work than the other. It includes more improvements,” Morris said. “It’s a much longer project.”
The total cost of the two phases is estimated at $148 million. That includes $14 million for the preliminary engineering and right-of-way acquisition for both phases, $44 million for the recentlycompleted first phase and $90 million for the upcoming phase.
For both phases of the widening, the vast majority of the funding - between 80 and 90 percent - is federal, Morris said.
