With the Democrats set to take power in Congress in a few weeks, I thought I’d give them a little advice. So here goes:
• Don’t get carried away. Americans didn’t elect you because of your stands on issues, because most of you didn’t take a stand. Your best asset in November 2006 was that you weren’t Republicans. So don’t think that Americans endorsed,, what you think. It’s just that the Republicans were so bad that people were willing to take a chance on you.
4 No payback. Observers know that Democrats were treated lousy when the Republicans controlled Congress. Basically, you didn’t count for anything. Now you have the whip hand, but I urge you to be better. Work with the Republicans on the problems that you have inherited, and don’t dismiss an idea just because it comes from a Republican. It actually might have merit.
• Balance the budget. To me, this is the doctor’s equivalent of “Do no harm” to a patient. Balancing the budget is simple. All it involves is making choices, and that is what you are sent to Congress to do.
Let’s face facts here. Americans basically want every service known to mankind and we don’t want to pay for anything. We’re spoiled. So that’s why we elect someone else to make our decisions. And for decades we’ve been told that you can cut our taxes, increase our spending, and balance the budget. Right. And I can eat a banana split every day and never gain weight.
For way way too long this government hasn’t been able to find the will to say “No,” and that has placed our counties future at risk. I mean, China - still led by Communists - owns $1 trillion of our debt. American workers can watch their tax dollars go straight into the hands of people who we used to consider our mortal enemies because
