one AP class; many enroll in two or more. All of the seniors enroll in two or more AP classes. AVID students are supported in content-area classrooms as well as in the AVID elective. According to Mr. Payne, “It is a program that has helped change the culture of our school. We are an academic-oriented institution. Since 1990, nearly 40,000 AVID students have graduated from high school and gone on to col- • lege. 94.3% of AVID students report enrolling in college, 77.1% in four-year institutions and 17.2% in community colleges. While the national average for four-year college enrollment is 40 percent, Falls Church High School’s AVID graduate enrollment and attendance into college is 98%.*
Buck Payne stated that, “we work with what they have; we ' don’t look for excuses. We look for the positive attributes in a student. We look for a student who wants to achieve but may not know how; who wants to go . to college, but may be the first generation. AVID is very much . 1 like the baseball diamond; you build it and they will come. I came here to Falls Church to be a part of this. I live in . Sperryville, VA about 75 miles ., from school. I travel that twice daily; this is my investment. . When folks ask why I do it, I tell them that there is no greater reward than to see the smile on students’ faces when they walk in and share that they have been accepted into college. It is part of making a dream a reality”.
