It’s only a few dollars a month, but the faithful get a break on telephone taxes. The Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors, at the regular January meeting Wednesday afternoon, heard County Administrator John McCarthy explain that churches and church offices are, by state law, exempt from taxes collected by telephone companies. McCarthy said any church group that wishes to take advantage of this minor tax break should contact his office to be put on a list of those exempt. McCarthy noted that government offices and fire and rescue organizations are also exempt.

The board also heard about the plans to stagger members’ terms. On March 5, at one o’clock in the afternoon - prior to the board’s regular meeting - the chairman of the elections board will conduct a drawing; supervisors in two of the five districts thus chosen will, after the 2007 election, serve terms of two years, instead of four. Terms will be a full four years after that.
It was noted that, by state law, the members of the county school board must serve terms contiguous with the supervisors. Therefore, at the March drawing, school board members from the same two districts will be limited to one term of two years, starting in January of 2008.
