VVUV^V 111 MVOK TllgllUH. iUtUJ 1U11IV » and Joe Biggs, James’ mentors of the ^ past seven years, also took James to visit a number of schools in preparation for graduation. “It’s tough getting ready for college, with all the applications and the FAFSA and everything,” said James, who will transfer to Lord Fairfax Community College for his second semester. “I probably couldn’t have done that on my own—my mentors really helped me a lot.” Mrs. Biggs recalls that James also found the Next Step office extremely helpful as he * negotiated the college application process. “Sometimes there was a lot of paperwork, between the essays and applying for scholarships,” she said. “James was very comfortable stopping by the Next Step office, he felt like that was a support system. He never had to wait in line, and Ms. Hope always got right back to him when he left a message. When he wasn’t sure how to follow through, she found him.” The Next Step office is now helping
