ed to Georgetown University. “One thing to remember about these highly competitive schools,” said Next Step Director Miranda Hope, “is that they turn down students with 1400 SATs and 4.0 GPAs all the time,” an indication of the overall strength of these young men’s applications. Next Step was initiated in 2005 with a two-year grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. 2007 is significant as the first year in which the program will be relying solely on local individuals, organizations, and foundations for financial support. RCPS included a $5,000 donation to the program in its 2006-07 budget, and a number of generous community members have already stepped forward to offer significant support in the form of new scholarship and program funds. Fundraising and “awareness-raising” efforts continue to make sure the program—and the scholarship funds it has helped to secure—is sustained indefinitely. A “Next Step Barbeque” event, held at Rappahannock County Elementary School on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, raised over $1,500 for the program.
