Riveting of certain pieces would have been done on the banking of the Thornton River. There may have been some ceremony when the bridge opened, and likely someone wanted to be the first to walk, run, skip, ride a horse, pull a wagon, or jump off the bridge.
People still remember the bridge. Eddie Jenkins, who works on Cliff Miller’s farm, has crossed the bridge hundreds of times. He remembers the time a speeding 1948 Buick, supposedly driven by a bunch of sailors unfamiliar with the road, ran up the sloping end of the bridge onto the railing, turning over on the deck, knocking that side into the river.
