Hero in Virginia we basically have a clay soil. There is nothing wrong with clay except that bv its natural composition it “locks up” many of the nutrients essential to good plant growth. As we all know, clay is either rock solid when dry and sun baked or a slimy ball of mush when soaked with water. In either state, the structure of the soil does not allow for water, air and nutrient transfer. To change this, we must amend the soil so it becomes that wonderful friable consistency that Grandpa had in his old vegetable patch.
I have spent the past five years working a portion of my veggie garden to a point when.1 1 am almost happy with the friable soil I now have. 1 have amended with green sand, compost, perlite, grass clippings, and leaf mold, as well as cover crops, peat moss, and earth worm castings.
