covered? Yet, now the county is paying someone to promote Rappahannock all over North America! Who is crazy here? What is the model— cutsie Shepardstown; once quiet, now glutted Culpeper?
The past chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Pete Estes, was no fool. He knew making 231 a scenic highway wasn’t going to protect anything. It sounds as if it should protect something, but it doesn’t. It does put a - red line on the map so every biker and dav-tripper in the state and beyond will come visit. More accidents, more deaths, more EMT demands, noise and yes, a few more hamburgers are sold or bottles of cider.
Tourism has been a fact of life in Rappahannock for decades. And it certainly doesn’t need the county to budget $35,000 for a parttime consultant to get travel writers from California to come visit. Nature is already Rappahannock's best ally: Old Rag. Luray Caverns, Skyline Drive. These tourist promoters bring tens of thousands of people every year.
