And with that, an historic era was set in motion. Six ladies were persuaded to run for town council and two days before the election Dorothy Davis agreed to run for mayor after learning of all the duties of the office.
In a write-in election for mayor and town council Washington residents elected Mrs. Dorothy Davis as mayor and the following town council members: Mrs. Bobbie Critzer, Mrs. Dorothy Hawkins, Miss Ruby Jenkins, Mrs. Louise Price, Mrs. Acsah Miller and Miss Elizabeth
