Healthy soil is the foundation of any good garden. Like a house, if the foundation is not constructed properly, it is liable to problems, if not total collapse. If soil is lacking in structure, essential compounds and the ability to transfer nutrients, it will not support healthy plants.
You will buy those wonderful looking seedlings from the local garden center, take them home, plant them and sometimes, within days, they are shriveled and dying. Or, if they do manage to get established they just never seem to look healthy and the lack of fruiting is a big disappointment. Naturally, many people will go back to the place of purchase and demand new plants because there was obviously something wrong with the first ones.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The companies that grow tens if not hundreds of thousands of seedlings do a pretty good job. They start the seeds in a growing medium they know will give the best chance of survival. It is up to you to ensure that when you take those seedlings home that your growing medium, the soil, is going to offer the young plants a stress free and as healthy an environment as possible.
