Harris, bom in North Carolina, was led toward the guitar by his grandmother, but only the saxophone was available through his elementary public school program and thus began his musical career. Harris studied music both at Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia. From 1982 -1985 he was an apprentice to African musician Babatunde Olatunji, father of the African drum movement in the U.S.
Harris taught in D.C. public schools for 17 years. While at Charles Houston Elementary he helped develop the children’s choir that toured Europe. He directed and played the saxophone for the choirs performance at the White House.
