The horse: Virginia-bred Quality Road looks to give sire Elusive Quality his second Kentucky Derby winner in six years, hoping to duplicate Smarty Jones’ 2004 romp.
A grandson of sire of sires Mr. Prospector, Elusive Quality was a brilliant miler who set tw o track records for trainer Bill Mott — seven furlongs in 1:20 at Florida’s Gulfstream Park, and at a mile on the turf when winning the 1998 Poker Handicap at Belmont Park, in 1:31 3/5, a record that still stands.
Other Elusive Quality standouts include Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Raven’s Pass and UAE Oaks winner Devotee.
Elusive Quality stands at Darley Stud in Kentucky.
Quality Road is the fourth foal out of 14-year-old mare Kobla. By standout broodmare sire Strawberry Road, Kobla is a full sister to 1997 champion Ajina. Ajina was known as a router, with five of seven wans at 1 1/8 or 1 Vi? miles.
