As the capstone to this year’s Trash Free Rappahannock campaign, Dickie Gallihugh’s “unofficial secondary Rappahannock landfill” on Route 231 was cleaned out and officially closed. More than 30 truckloads -estimated at 50 tons-of tires, old appliances and furniture, lumber, scrap metal and unidentifiable rubbish was removed by a dozen volunteers and loaders, dump trucks and crews provided by VDOT. Led by John McCarthy, Peter Luke, Hunt Harris and Barney O'Meara, the team cleaned trash out of the brush while the loaders removed the piles of rubbish from the yard and the old road bed that parallels Route 231.
