Jockey: John Velazquez was bom Nov. 24, 1971 in Puerto Rico. Small and wiry', Velazquez headed straight to the island nation's wellregarded jockey school as a teen, first riding on the circuit in Puerto Rico.
Hall of Fame jockey and now jockey’s agent Angel Cordero Jr. lured Velazquez to New York in 1990.
Subsequently, Velazquez has won or shared 20 meet titles in New York and was ranked as the state’s top jockey for four consecutive years, 2001-2004.
In 2001, he became the first jockey in Saratoga history to ride six winners on a single card.
A two-time Eclipse champion, Velazquez won the Eddie Arcaro Award three times, the Bill Shoemaker Award for the top performance by a jockey in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup, and the New York Turf Writers Association’s Fourstardave Award.
Velazquez was elected chairman of the board of directors of the Jockeys’ Guild in July 2006. In September 2008, he won his 4,000th race.
Velazquez has ridden in 10 Derbies, with his best finish second on Invisible Ink in 2001.
