In the $300,000/$330,000 example, why not make banks — at least those whose very existence on Earth Day 2009 is thanks to our collective generosity — get their 10 percent on the $300,000 loan, then collect the additional $30,000, without interest or with interest that is laughably low, from the homeowner’s energy savings? Foundations, many of which have environmental bona fides, could step up to help. Same deal — repayable grants, the money coming from the energy savings and other environmental advantages of green technology. Easy? Of course not. Doable? We think so, provided we have the will. Most of all, we want to look at this more closely because it is fair. » If we don’t get everyone involved in a green revolution, it’s more likely going to be a green bust.
