Father Robert came to the Abbey from Baltimore as a young novice in 1961 and has been there ever since — 47 years.
He was elected Abbot in 1998 but there is a hint that it has worn on him.
“I get no sympathy,” he chuckles. “It's hard being Abbot,” he said as he is the one responsible for the business affairs of the Abbey and it takes him away, into the outside world, from his life as a monk.
The Abbey is also shrinking. Of the 22 members, 10 are over the age of 80. The youngest is 51.
