Democratic Lt. Governor candidate Chuck Robb has called for specific state and federal action to improve aid for drought-stricken Virginia fanners as they prepare to face the hard winter ahead.
“At the very minimum the state should maintain detailed information of state and national feed reserves and establish emergency procedures for getting that food to Virginia farmers when a critical shortage develops,’’ Robb told an audience in Suffolk Wednesday evening.
Robb also joined the thousands of Virginia farmers who are asking why it is taking so long for aid to be delivered. “Disaster relief work must be expedited,” he said. As of September 1, added Robb, 2,343 applications for assistance had been filed by state farmers, but only 75 payments had been received by farmers. In addition, Robb noted, no action has been taken on 15 requests for Small Business Administration loans, although SBA is now revising its programs to speed up action.
“Something has to change,” Robb said. “Aid programs have no value at all if the farmers are wiped out before the aid checks arrive.”
