The recent Labor Day weekend marked the second consecutive holiday period that the Virginia State Police increased its coverage on certain interstate highways in an effort to reduce the frequency of traffic accidents and the resultant injuries and deaths.
And, according to Major C. M. Boldin, the results were much the same—a high number of arrests for speeding and an almost equally high number of motorists needing assistance.
Over the three-day Labor Day weekend, 39 troopers and four sergeants participated in an increased patrol on 1-95 from Richmond to Washington and also on 1-64 from Richmond to the Charles City County line.
The increased patrols were for an eight-hour shift each day and although this effort was for three days compared to seven days during the July 4 week, troopers made 1,050 arrests including ,800 for speeding, 28 reckless driving and 10 for driving under the influence of alcohol.
