Of those interviewed concerning the impact of the cancellations, the majority felt that Dalton had given his campaign a major setback.
“The effect ranges from damaging to disastrous,” said a college president who indicated he was inclined to vote for Dalton. Two political science professors agreed.
‘‘Howell was counterattacking, not attacking,” observed a reporter. ‘‘He stands up there and listens to Dalton spend the whole evening twisting his views on repeal of right-to-work and gun control out of shape, and then he gets mad. It’s exactly what John has been trying to get him to do, but John’s over-reacted badly. They weren’t personal attacks on Dalton anyway. They were attacks on tilings Dalton and his staff said and did.”
‘‘I don’t see anything Howell said that wasn’t the kind of thing a politician wouldn’t just shrug off,” said another newsman. “There is something more to the cancellations than just that.”
Peter Bacque, political writer for the Charlottesville Daily Progress, had a theory about what that 'something else’ might be. “I think Dalton helped his campaign by calling off the debates,” he said, “because any future debates, like the ones before, would have been like Custer’s last stand with Howell in the role of Sitting Bull.” Another reporter agreed, saying that Dalton had benefitted in two ways. “On the positive side, he will stir , up some sympathy votes. On the negative, he won’t get outpointed by Howell in any more confrontations,” he said. It may indeed be true that Dalton’s advisers believed the debates were hurting the candidate more than they were helping him. Given the nature of the political animal, it does not seem reasonable that Dalton would have called off the debates if his strategists had perceived that he was winning them. If that is so, he may have helped his campaign to the extent that he cut his losses. Most of those interviewed, however, did not believe this would offset the negative image that the cancellations may have created of a man who is either unable or unwilling to take the heat of Howell’s political broadsides.
