Magistrate Dovel of Luray found Charles Mitchell of Port Republic, Virginia, guilty of gathering ginseng roots within Shenandoah National Park. Park Ranger Keith Langdon observed the violation and issued citations to both Mitchell and his companion, J. Burrus of Keezletown, Virginia. Mitchell, who contested the charge, was found guilty and fined $300 and sentenced to four months in jail. The jail sentence was suspended upon proper payment of the fine. Mr. Burrus chose to plead guilty to the charge and was fined $50. Ginseng is a highly valued native herb which is becoming endangered because of long and intense gathering of its roots.
