“I never let on I didn’t know a thing until I learned it. I loved nursing and when you love a thing, you learn..,I loved nursing and I was going to do it and I did—the hard way. I never did learn Latin though,” she added with a chuckle.

She followed all the instructions in the medical book and then threw in a folk medicine practice for good measure—burning a clean linen handkerchief and placing it on the new born’s navel cord. One of those home-delivered babies, now a grandmother, still visits Mrs. Kendall.
