Lieberman acknowledged that the program was a “free lunch’’ but he noted that it provided most of the nutrients in the diets of poor participants. He added that the site visits also provided an opportunity for socialization and human contact to those older persons without families.
“The nutrition program is great for the poor people who really need it,” commented Commissioner Preston Moore, “But I don’t think the government ought to subsidize” those who don’t, he added.
