Ben H. Bolen, Commissioner of Virginia State Parks reported recently that state park attendance for this year will probably reach the three million mark. Park attendance through Labor Day weekend had already set a new record of over 2.5 million visitors.
“Notable increases were in the categories of camping, swimming and hiking,” Bolen said. “Visitors seem to enjoy the close contact with nature.”
Among other special programs, arts and crafts festivals, musical concerts, and programs featuring interpretive awareness themes were presented to enthusiastic crowds. One of these programs, the Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival at Chippokes Plantation State Park, attracted over 20,000 visitors.
The opening of new facilities at Grayson Highlands State Park, near Volney, Virginia, has also boosted Park attendance. Of special interest is the new Visitor Center, which has been averaging 1,700 visitors per weekend since opening in early August.
