During the seven-day July 4 period, from July 1 through July 7, increased patrols involved 40 troopers and the area covered was from Richmond to Washington. The result was 2,269 arrests —1,647 for speeding, 90 for reckless driving ana 11 tor driving under the influence of alcohol.
A total of 14 accidents, none of which was considered serious, were investigated during the time of the increased Labor Day weekend patrol compared to a sevenday total of 43 over the July 4 period.
However, 10 persons did die in motor vehicle accidents in other parts of Virginia over the Labor Day weekend as compared to seven a year ago. "Another very important aspect of the increased patrols,” commented Major Boldin, “is the number of motorists (615) troopers were able to assist. This is very important because troopers are not out there solely as enforcers of the law, they’re also dedicated to helping the motoring public.”
