speech problems. She tested articulation, hearing, vocabulary, grammar and number concepts and checked for any physical reasons which might cause speech impediments. After the testing, parents were called in for a meeting to discuss goals for their child and the methods and materials used in therapy. Parent involvement in a speech correction program is paramount, said Elizabeth. Rappahannock shares her services through the Piedmont Regional School and so she’s in the county for only two days per week. This limits the hours that she can spend with her students here and makes it imperative for parents to continue therapy work at home.
Poppet Helpers
Elizabeth holds individual and group sessions with three to five students in a makeshift classroom transformed out of the old clinic. Developmental learning materials are stacked neatly on shelves in a comer. She uses everything from pictures that illustrate language concepts to hand puppets to Language Master tape recording machines in her instructional program.
The puppets are for her younger students. Kindergartners, in particular, appreciate a kiss from Hound Dog for “good talking” much more than praise from the teachers, she noted.
