A coalition of private and public individuals and groups has organized Sun Day. The purpose of Sun Day is to direct the attention of all of us to the need for developing rapidly the potentials of solar energy for use as our fossil fuels are depleted.
Everyone is aware that the costs of energy from coal, oil, and gas have risen. These costs are expected to continue to rise as the world’s supply of fossil fuels dwindles. What are the alternatives?
A few years ago scientists dreamed of limitless energy from “burning the rocks” in uranium and thorium powered plants and from “burning the seas” in thermonuclear plants. Now the promise of nuclear power using uranium appears uncertain, because of operating and economic problems, because no safe means of storing the lethal radioactive fission products for centuries seems likely, and because of the probability that plutonium from the plants will be diverted to use by terrorists.
