It is not a self-indulgent work with a lot of people on personal ego trips flitting about a stage, doing “their own thing.” Instead, “Gathering Together” is a tight, cohesive production that has been highly rehearsed and choreographed down to the nth degree.
At a recent Saturday afternoon practice session, Sally worked with Nan Smith and Sherry Woodard for over two hours, refining and rehearsing their parts. Nan and Sherry are typical of the performers in Last-Minute Wood. Both have full-time jobs that are physically demanding. Sherry refinishes furniture and grows plants for her shop. Faith Mountain Herbs and Antiques, in Sperryville. Nan also refinishes furniture and recanes chairs for Country Cupboards in Washington.
Sally had musical accompaniment on tape for the beginning of the number. After the tape ran out, the two women danced in silence as their director looked on.
