One year of therapy ought to be enough for children with a mild “th” problem where they say “thun” instead of sun,” she said. However, progress is “so dependent on the child’s attitude,” she added, as well as on the severity of the speech problem.
Elizabeth reported that she tests for the ability to pronounce 73 different sounds before developing an educational program for a student. If the child makes between 15 and 20 errors plus a low score on language skills, then she knows that correction will take longer than a year. If the child is also hearing impaired, he will always need extra help to keep up, she added.
Full-Time Therapist
Elizabeth stressed the county’s need for a full-time speech therapist. Her two days in Rappahannock give her only a half hour twice a week to spend with each pupil. “This means they must have outside help. They must have their parents involved. I wish I had more time here,” she remarked.
