In the classes that Sally offers here, she teaches strength, flexibility, balance and coordination and allows her students to develop their own “movement vocabulary." She aims her instruction at making dancers consciously aware of their own unconscious movements instead of at perfecting standard technical movements.
Most of the dancers in the Last-Minute Wood Company have jobs as masons, carpenters and woodworkers or work at other professions where the body is used in day-to-day labor. Sally considers this physical conditioning an important resource in teaching beginners. The necessity for hard work that country living entails is also one of the major reasons why Sally chose to move to Rappahannock “I felt a life style where 1 used my body more would feed my dancing," she said.
"Gathering Together," the piece that will be performed at the elementary school on April 29, began with improvisations last October. “I started with a feeling I had about this community...There’s a great sense of togetherness and merging but often at the expense of individuality,” Sally remarked. This loss of individuality, she feels, arises out of fear of being alone.
