Disbelief
To the editor:
Tuesday, April 4, 1978, I attended a Rappahannock County School Board Meeting and listened in total disbelief to comments made by the Board about their own teaching staffs at Rappahannock County Schools. Teachers, attending the meeting to voice their disappointment in the proposed budget for 1978-89, unexpectedly found themselves to be the targets of unjust criticism. "The teachers have no dedication nor love for the children,” was one barb which pricked the sides of Rappahannock County teachers. This comment, according to a member of the Board, stemmed from the fact that the “children” had not been mentioned once by the protesting teachers throughout the entire budget hearing. Since when, I might ask, have the children been involved in the negotiations of teachers’ contracts?
Rappahannock County High School students who attended the meeting, however, were quick to speak in defense of the teachers’ dedication and devotion, citing numerous examples of the long and uncompensated hours many donate in support of those extra curricular activities vital to all schools and their students.
