A wart is a virus infection of the outer layer of skin, according to the American Medical Association.
Ordinary warts aren’t harmful. Often they will eventually go away, even without treatment. They will not become cancerous. Children get warts more often than adults. Some persons seem to be immune and never get them. Warts are contagious and can be transmitted from one person to another. Scratching warts can cause them to spread.
