Ann Thomas was the lone Panther to bring home a ribbon from the Virginia Group A track championships held last Saturday, May 19, in Crozet. Ann finished third in the two-mile run with 12:13.1. The winning time and new meet record of 12:01.5 was turned in by Susan Earles of Shawsville High School.
The Lady Panthers didn't do as well in the state meet as coach Ann Speiker expected. “Ann Thomas had difficulty with a hip injury and did not place in the mile. She limped to her third place finish in the two-mile,” said Speiker.
Rhonda Wiley won her trials in the hurdles but only placed seventh in the finals while Natalie Swindler ran fourth in her trials. Liz Freeman, who reached top form in first place finishes at end of season meets, did not place in the 880.
Jennette Beebe, another consistent winner for the Lady Panthers, and Donna Gore threw the discus in the low 90’s—not far enough to place in the finals. Tammy Atkins was unable to get a measured discus throw. In placing seventh, Johanna Day cleared 5’ in the high jump, an event dominated by state record holder Allison Stone of Luray.
